New Breast Implant Tested In North Texas

Implants Are Second Most Popular Form Of Cosmetic Surgery

Despite the controversy about safety, breast implants are still the second most popular cosmetic surgery for women. Now, a new implant using silicone gel is being tested in North Texas.

NBC 5's Carol Wang found that most North Texas women believe breast implants are most popular due to their appeal by the opposite sex. Women also said that having a larger chest has filled them with confidence that was previously absent.

Jennifer Adkins chose to be part of a clinical trial with Dr. William Adams and The University of Texas Southwestern. The trial is testing a new implant, made of a cohesive silicone gel.

Doctors have said what makes these implants so different is the gum-candy like texture which can also have safety benefits for patients. In other models, material has leaked from the implant into other areas of the body.

Currently, the FDA has only approved two saline versions of breast implants and some are criticizing the current study for experimenting with women's bodies.

But patients who have been given the new implants rave about their new look. "It's just a more natural implant. They kind of settle in ... the recovery process is minimal," said Adkins.

Less than a week after her surgery, Adkins was up and around and feeling good about herself.

"It is one of the best decisions I have made," Adkins said. "Knowing that they're there and knowing that I've done it ... getting that little confidence boost I get everyday when I look in the mirror."

The trial lasts until April and doctors are still accepting patients for the trial.

To take part, the cost is around $6,000.
