Every woman's dream: redeploying fat tissue to restore youthful appearance in face and hands
TORONTO, Dec. 7 /CNW/ - Women are looking at their love handles with new
affection since plump is back in fashion. It's the location of the plumping
that is now different and in high demand. Consumers are now looking to the
safest of all injectibles to restore their youthful appearance -- their own
fat tissue -- and Toronto-based plastic surgeon Atul Kesarwani is the
physician that holds the canula to this latest cosmetic procedure.
"Women are looking for procedures that will restore their previous
appearance, without a lot of down time or noticeable incision scars," says Dr.
Kesarwani, Division Head of Plastic Surgery at Toronto East General Hospital.
"Women want procedures that are long lasting, produce great results yet are
minimally invasive."
Fat grafting -- or lipostructure -- follows the current trend of less
invasive, long lasting procedures for face and hand rejuvenation. Wrinkles,
depressions and even deep lines in the face are plumped up with carefully
harvested fat cells that replace lost volume associated with aging. As an
organic filler, folds between the corner of the mouth and nose (nasolabial),
below the eyes (nasojugal) and above the brow can be smoothed out and wrinkles
replenished without fear of complications. Skin is smoother, vibrant and when
micro-fat is injected above the brow, it can lift and shape the eyebrow
beautifully similar to a mini-forehead lift which is a more recent
application, says Dr. Kesarwani. It can also eliminate dark circles when
injected underneath the eye. Hands, which are more and more becoming the focus
of cosmetic attention, are handsomely restored by rounding out deep skin folds
and filling in loose skin. The cost is also favourable since the filler
material comes from a patient's own body and not the expensive foreign
substances commonly used today. "FotoFacial (Photo Facial) is an excellent
treatment combined with Lipostructure for both hands and face as it restores
and rejuvenates the appearance and feel of the skin". adds Dr. Kesarwani.
The procedure is delicate as the harvested fat cells are gently
centrifuged. Patients receive local anaesthesia and a mild sedation if
required. The fat is removed using a very thin liposuction canula attached to
a syringe for suction. Once the fat is removed, Dr. Kesarwani carefully
examines the tissue looking for the healthy concentrated fat cells, which he
will use. These cells are gently filled into a tiny syringe and then layered
into the areas requiring enhancement, working from the underlying bone up to
the skin surface. The fat must be delicately woven into the existing tissues
in order to pick up a blood supply allowing the fat cells to survive.
Incisions are miniscule, rendering the procedure virtually untraceable.
"Fat that survives will last forever," says Dr. Kesarwani. "Results are
dramatic and patients do not have to return to top off results with additional
procedures."
Kesarwani learned the lipostructure procedure from the New York surgeon
who pioneered it, Dr. Sydney Coleman, and has perfected the technique over the
last year through his private Toronto-based practice.
"I've been very pleased with the results, as have my patients," says
Kesarwani. "This very refined procedure will be the next great movement in
cosmetic surgery."
