Operation mammary loss (for men)

It’s a load some men want to get off their chests — and they’re doing it surgically. The Capital’s hospitals have seen a significant rise in the number of breast reduction surgeries conducted on men. A couple of years back, there’d be about half a dozen cases a year at Apollo or Ganga Ram, now that number is more like 15 a month.

Says Dr Lokesh Kumar, senior consultant, plastic surgery, at Apollo: “Earlier, I used to get, maybe, two to three patients of ‘gynecomastia’ (or abnormally large breasts) every six months at Apollo. Now, I alone conduct at least three to four such surgeries every month. My four other colleagues also conduct a similar number of operations in the same time.''

It isn't that Delhi's males are just following Pamela Anderson's lead. Gynecomastia affects lifestyles, say doctors, pushing men to become compulsive introverts. But changing social mores have helped men to shed their inhibitions, and, in the process, some unfortunately located fatty tissue.

"For some men, fashion today means wearing figure-hugging T-shirts. As a result, men have become more sensitive about their physiques,'' says Dr Rakesh Khajanchi of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Dr Rajeev Ahuja, head of plastic surgery department at LNJP Hospital, adds that the incidence of gynecomastia in the population has not gone up suddenly. “It's just that more people are now aware that treatment is available for the condition,” says Dr Ahuja. Earlier, he says, only men with “embarrassingly large breasts” came in for surgery. That’s changed as well.

Improved surgical techniques have also contributed. Today’s liposuction-assisted procedure with a keyhole incision doesn't leave a scar and is a lot less painful.

But why do some men develop large breasts? The reasons vary from hormonal imbalance and side-effects of drugs to heavy workouts. “Quite a few of my patients are young men who regularly go to gyms and develop prominent breast muscles,” says Dr Kumar.
