Surgery Can Help You Develop Six-Pack Abs

'Abdominal Etching' Liposuction Technique Helps Create Definition

Stars like Janet Jackson have worked hard to get that six-pack look in their abdomen. But for most of us, the reality is a little different.

Ab Etching

But now, modern medicine has come to the rescue with a procedure called abdominal etching that can help make your tummy muscles pop out.

Do you have six-pack abs?Yes.Yes, I have more than a six-pack.No, but I'm working on it.Nope, not even close.I might, but it's hard to tell under that layer of fat. "When I first starting doing this procedure, most of the patients were either body builders or fitness competitors," said Dr. Bruce Nadler, a New York plastic surgeon. "But now as soon as Janet Jackson shows off her abs, then that's the way to go. So people who never even thought about having that defined look suddenly say, 'That's what I want.'"

Abdominal etching is a type of liposuction. The doctor removes fat from the stomach and love handles. But there's a twist: Nadler suctions so close to the surface of the skin that the instrument leaves a long indentation.

In most liposuction, that's a bad result. But in this procedure, those indentations help create the six-pack look.

Nadler said the swelling will decrease and the muscles will become more prominent.

Patients typically report that there is little pain associated with the surgery. But as with any liposuction procedure, you still need to diet and exercise. If not, the fat cells left behind can increase in size, and instead of a six-pack, you can end up with a "beer belly" look.

The cost of this type of surgery is $7,000.
