PATNA: It is good news for breast cancer victims. If the claim of former HoD of surgery, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr Sanjay Sharma, is to be believed-with the Key Hole Mastectomy method, the cancerous tumour in breast can be removed without affecting the shape and size of breast.

Dr Sharma, while making video presentation on "key hole mastectomy reconstruction" and delivering lecture on "Breast cancer - The new paradigm, evidence based or moving with time", at a function organised jointly by the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Association of Surgeons of India, and Bihar chapter of Plastic Surgeons of India, said that the new method would prove to be a boon to breast cancer treatment.

"Both the skin and nipple of breast will remain intact as the vacant space of the breast, following removal of tumour, is filled up with the help of plastic surgery," he said.

Earlier, Dr Sharma said, breast cancer used to be treated with the help of radiation and chemotherapy.

But with the introduction of new method, the doctor would only need to make a small hole in the breast to take out the tumour, without affecting the beauty of the breast, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Acharya Kishore Kunal said that people of the state benefit a lot with such type of scientific discussions by renowned experts, as it keeps them abreast with the latest technological advancement in the field.

Speaking on the occasion, director of Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, Dr J K Singh, informed that currently 28 percent breast cancer patients are in India, which was only second to the number of women suffering from uterus cancer.

But with the number of breast cancer victims increasing fast, the number of women suffering from breast cancer would soon surpass the number of patients suffering from uterus cancer.

He advised women to use the Mammography technique for early detection of breast cancer. Dr R K Goswami, Dr Preetanjali Singh and Dr C Khandelwal also spoke on the occasion.
